Prepaid cell phones should not be regulated by law to get registered for tracking. I have an iphone that i greatly enjoy and use for various things like going checking the weather, email, playing games, etc. However, after learning about how to government is using our cell phones to get information about us is a scary thought. The thought of your every location being recorded or monitored is also a scary thought people should have the right to a cell phone and not be tracked if they wish to do so. I do understand why the government would want to be in control of all cell phone activity for the safety of our country. But if a criminal wanted to get their hands on an unregistered phone it would not be that difficult, if registering them was indeed a law.
In other words not all people who buy prepaid cell phones or use prepaid cell phones are criminals they are just people who possibly can afford a high end cell phone or someone that wants to protect their privacy. And criminals are not going to follow the law anyway so why should the government put a regulation on something that will affect the privacy of the citizens they are trying to protect. In this case i think the bad outweighs the good and i would not support this law.
I tend to agree with you on cell phones. People have the right not to be tracked if they choose. It seems like an excuse for the government to be able to monitor us if they want to. It is a somewhat scary and uncomfortable thought to know that the government can watch you if they want. Also, I agree any criminal can probably find a way to an untraceable phone, or to register it to a different name. They are criminals, and probably have there own way. It's kind of like the modern day payphone.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the aspect that people deserve the right to their own privacy. I was not aware that the government was trying to ban prepaid phones and the fact that they are is somewhat sketchy. If I am to go all conspiracy theorist here then perhaps I can suggest that major phone companies such as att and verizon are influencing the governments stance. Who really knows. I suppose my final point would be to keep prepaid cell phones as they are not only economical but are also are pretty good means of staying off the grid.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you mentioned that criminals are not going to follow the law either way. I had said that banning prepaid cell phones was drastic, but that requiring users to register their phones would be okay. After reading your post I've changed my mind. It would only affect the good honest people who use prepaid phones for their convenience and value, it would not affect the criminals. I also like how you said that not all prepaid phone users are criminals. I think sometimes people are paranoid and jump right to the "well what do you have to hide" question, but it's true, there are people out there who use them honestly and deserve that right and privacy.
